Day Trip to Arundel

Discover the must see historical town of Arundale in Sussex

Arundel represents one of Sussex’s crown jewels, which is perfectly positioned for a memorable day trip from Woodshill Byres. This historic market town, dominated by its wonderful castle, offers a delightful blend of history, natural beauty and quintessential English charm that captivates visitors of all ages.

Arundel Castle, home to the Dukes of Norfolk for over 400 years, stands overlooking the River Arun valley. The castle’s opulent interiors house priceless paintings, tapestries and furniture, whilst the beautifully restored medieval keep offers breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside. The castle grounds feature beautiful gardens, including the award-winning Collector Earl’s Garden and offers peaceful lakeside walks.

The town’s position on the River Arun provides numerous water-based activities. The boating lake offers rowing and pedalo experiences, whilst river boat trips provide a unique perspective of the castle and surrounding wetlands. These gentle cruises reveal the area’s rich wildlife, including kingfishers, herons and the famous Arundel swans.

Arundel Wetland Centre showcases 65 acres of lakes, reedbeds and meadows, home to hundreds of species of wetland birds. The centre’s well-designed paths and hides make it accessible for all visitors, whilst the Tropical House provides year-round interest with exotic species and lush vegetation.

The town centre enchants with its maze of antique shops, art galleries and independent boutiques housed within medieval and Georgian buildings. High Street and Maltravers Street offer everything from fine furniture and rare books to vintage jewellery and collectibles. After browsing, visitors can enjoy traditional afternoon tea at one of the charming cafés or indulge in locally sourced cuisine at the town’s excellent restaurants.
