Walk in the South Downs

South Downs Walking holidays

The South Downs National Park, stretching across the chalky hills that surround Woodshill Byres, offers some of England’s most wonderful walking opportunities. This area of outstanding natural beauty provides everything from gentle strolls to challenging hikes, all set against the backdrop of rolling hills, ancient woodlands and sweeping vistas that have inspired writers and artists for centuries.

The South Downs Way, a 100-mile National Trail, passes close to the cottages, offering access to well-maintained paths suitable for all abilities. Day walkers can choose shorter sections that showcase the area’s diverse landscapes, from beech hangers and chalk grassland to river valleys and historic sites. The clearly marked bridleways accommodate both walkers and cyclists, whilst horse riders can enjoy designated routes through this equestrian-friendly landscape.

For those preferring a more leisurely approach, several car parks provide access to elevated viewpoints without lengthy walks. Chanctonbury Ring, crowned by its distinctive copse of beech trees, offers panoramic views across the Weald and south to the English Channel. Devil’s Dyke, Britain’s largest dry valley, provides spectacular scenery alongside hang-gliding displays and family-friendly facilities.

The downland’s unique ecosystem supports rare wildlife, including skylarks, yellowhammers and numerous butterfly species. Spring brings beautiful displays of wildflowers, including orchids and cowslips, whilst autumn colours transform the beech woods into golden cathedrals of light.

Many historical interests await, with ancient burial mounds, hill forts and the remnants of medieval field systems telling the story of thousands of years of human habitation. The combination of natural beauty, wildlife and historical significance makes every South Downs walk a journey of discovery through England’s most cherished landscape.
