Ideal for Walkers

Discover the wonderful South Downs National Park and other Sussex walking routes

The South Downs National Park begins literally at your doorstep, making our cottages a walker’s paradise with access to some of England’s most spectacular hiking territory. From gentle countryside strolls to challenging downland treks, the area caters to every walking ability and ambition.

The famous South Downs Way, England’s newest National Trail, passes within easy reach, offering 100 miles of stunning chalk downland walking from Winchester to Eastbourne. This ancient route follows prehistoric tracks and medieval pilgrimage paths, providing historical context alongside breathtaking views. The trail’s accessibility means you can tackle short sections or embark on multi-day adventures, returning each evening to cottage comfort.

Our farm’s elevated position provides immediate access to panoramic ridge walks with sweeping views across Sussex and Surrey. Well-maintained footpaths and bridleways wind through our 200-acre property, connecting to the wider South Downs network without requiring car travel. The terrain varies from gentle valley walks perfect for morning constitutionals to challenging hill climbs that reward effort with spectacular vistas.

Local circular walks include the Chanctonbury Ring, an ancient hilltop crowned with beech trees, and the picturesque villages of Storrington and Pulborough. The nearby River Arun provides riverside walking opportunities, whilst the Wey-South Path offers longer distance challenges for serious hikers.

Wildlife observation enhances every walk. Spot deer at dawn, watch buzzards soaring above downland valleys, and discover rare chalk downland plants and butterflies. The changing seasons bring different rewards – spring bluebells, summer wildflowers, autumn colours, and winter’s stark beauty.

After exhilarating days exploring the downs, return to cottage comfort where traditional features create the perfect relaxation setting. Freshen up in the en-suite shower room, enjoy hearty meals in the well-equipped kitchen, and plan tomorrow’s adventures indoors or whilst sitting on the patio. The combination of world-class walking terrain and comfortable accommodation makes this the ideal base for serious walkers seeking the best of South Downs National Park.
